The Port Charles project involved gaining consent for the construction of a retreat lodge,
the Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat, which would provide serviced
and unserviced cabins set in about eight hundred acres of regenerating native bush. The bush was
placed under a Queen Elizabeth II National Trust covenant to ensure its ongoing protection and
management. The area is a significant kiwi habitat, and part of the attraction of the retreat is
guided walks through the bush to spot kiwi in their natural habitat.
The Tangiaro Kiwi Retreat website
provides a good overview of the objectives for the property. The proposal was a
Non-Complying Activity which met the Objectives and Policies of the District Plan
by providing significant environmental gain and enhancement of the natural attributes of
the site through a venture that will provide a sustainable income for the property.
